A Dynamic 6,000-Year Genetic History of Eurasia’s Eastern Steppe


Summary
The Eastern Eurasian Steppe was home to historic empires of nomadic pastoralists, including the Xiongnu and the Mongols. However, little is known about the region’s population history. Here, we reveal its dynamic genetic history by analyzing new genome-wide data for 214 ancient individuals spanning 6,000 years. We identify a pastoralist expansion into Mongolia ca. 3000 BCE, and by the Late Bronze Age, Mongolian populations were biogeographically structured into three distinct groups, all practicing dairy pastoralism regardless of ancestry. The Xiongnu emerged from the mixing of these populations and those from surrounding regions. By comparison, the Mongols exhibit much higher eastern Eurasian ancestry, resembling present-day Mongolic-speaking populations. Our results illuminate the complex interplay between genetic, sociopolitical, and cultural changes on the Eastern Steppe.

Abstract

A haplogroup is a group of similar alleles that have a common ancestor in which a mutation has occurred, inherited by all descendants. Haplogroups, particularly from the Y-chromosome (Y-DNA), is widely used in population genetics and genetic genealogy, a science that studies the genetic history of mankind. Recent studies of the Y-chromosome of modern Kazakhs have demonstrated the diversity of the Kazakh gene pool. During the expedition carried out in 2014-2016, clinical material was collected from varios regions of Kazakhstan, representing samples of peripheral blood and buccal scrapings. All representatives of Kazakh nationality were familiarized with informed consent. In total 1623 respondents participated in the study, 169 of whom were representatives from Baiuly tribe of Junior zhuz. We analyzed the provided samples and found that the Baiuly is characterized by 10 haplogroups, the most prevailing of which is the C2 haplogroup (85%).

Ancient genomic time-transect from the Central Asian Steppe unravels the history of the Scythians

Abstract
The Scythians were a multitude of horse-warrior nomad cultures dwelling in the Eurasian steppe during the first millennium BCE. Because of the lack of first-hand written records, little is known about the origins and relations among the different cultures. To address these questions, we produced genome-wide data for 111 ancient individuals retrieved from 39 archaeological sites from the first millennia BCE and CE across the Central Asian Steppe. We uncovered major admixture events in the Late Bronze Age forming the genetic substratum for two main Iron Age gene-pools emerging around the Altai and the Urals respectively. Their demise was mirrored by new genetic turnovers, linked to the spread of the eastern nomad empires in the first centuries CE. Compared to the high genetic heterogeneity of the past, the homogenization of the present-day Kazakhs gene pool is notable, likely a result of 400 years of strict exogamous social rules.

В первом тысячелетии до н.э. в евразийской степи обитало множество кочевых культур кочевников-кочевников - скифов. Из-за отсутствия письменных источников из первых рук мало что известно о происхождении и взаимоотношениях между различными культурами. Для решения этих вопросов мы подготовили данные по геному 111 древних особей, извлеченные из 39 археологических памятников первых тысячелетий до н.э. и до н.э. по всей территории Центрально-Азиатской степи. Мы обнаружили крупные смешивания в позднем бронзовом веке, формирующие генетический субстрат для двух основных генофондов железного века, формировавшихся вокруг Алтая и Урала, соответственно. Их исчезновение было отражено новыми генетическими превращениями, связанными с распространением восточных империй кочевников в первые века н. э. По сравнению с высокой генетической неоднородностью прошлого, примечательна гомогенизация генофонда современных казахов, вероятно, в результате 400 лет строгих экзогамных социальных правил.

Хотя полная история генетических трансформаций древнего населения Центрально-Евразийской Степи еще не раскрыта и остается предметом интереса не только генетиков, антропологов и историков, это исследование демонстрирует, насколько кардинально внутренние популяции Евразии изменялись и смешивались с течением времени. Интересно отметить, что вклад основного генетического пула, определяющего современных казахов, по оценке времени совпадает с периодом, когда было образовано Казахское ханство (~ 15 век н.э.).
Реализованное широкое международное сотрудничество и публикация в столь авторитетном мировом научном журнале, является глубоким признанием исследовательской деятельности ученых Казахстана.
